Divorce in RwandaGetting divorce in Rwanda is easy considering to the rest of East African region.

Marriage in Rwanda is civil and monogamous celebrated at sector offices.

However, divorce refers to an official or legal way of ending a valid marriage.

In addition, most of  divorce cases are filed in Primary courts.

Also  the  rest of the church wedding  & religious traditions are ceremonial.

  • Couples must be having 21 years, must present certificate of celibacy and they must give their consent before marriage.
  • Birth certificates & choosing  matrimonial regime is a must.

 

REASONS FOR DIVORCE IN RWANDA

There are 8 grounds of divorce in Rwanda:

  •  Adultery
  • Desertion for a period of at least (12) consecutive months
  • Conviction for an offense severely tainting the honour
  • Refusal to provide for the household needs
  • Excess, abuse or serious insults by one towards another
  • Gender based violence;
  • De facto separation for a period of at least two years
  • Non-cohabitation for more than twelve consecutive months from the day of celebration of marriage on unjustifiable.

DIVORCE BY MUTUAL CONSENT?

Divorce by mutual consent refers to the  one jointly applied for by both spouses after they agree on terminating  their marriage.

  • Couples  submit their  written agreement settling the effects of divorce to the judge.
  • The agreement talks about division of property, alimony & child custody.

More so, Couples filing mutual divorce may decide one lawyer to assist & advise them.
